I have always wanted to try a Genius Hour type of activity with the kids. It is partly my way to circumvent the education system and allow kids to hack their education (at least a little bit). No constraints of curriculum. Learning for the sake of learning. Curiosity for curiosity's sake!
Although I teach French, we are lucky to have one period a cycle for 'Group Study'. It's a class for emotional and social development, study habits, mindfulness, meditation, meta-cognition, etc. I am now using this English period to do Genius Hour. The kids have responded really positively so far. They are pumped about their topics; from terra-forming mars, to curbing racism, to galaxies colliding, to fast-fashion and fair wages.
Here is a short video about what Genius Hour is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMFQUtHsWhc
